If you consider yourself a hard worker, you might already be familiar with the term, “burnout.” In this episode, I speak with Theresa Ralston, a coach with over two decades of experience supporting the learning and development at the Estée Lauder companies. Theresa’s work with high-level executives has helped her recognize patterns of behavior that led to burnout, some of which included juggling competing priorities and neglecting self-care. Let’s listen to Theresa as she recalls stories of clients she’s helped and explains why she was inspired to join our coach training program.

  • In this episode of the Coaching Excellence Series, our host Bonnie Kim talks with long-time executive coach Theresa Ralston.

Theresa has over two decades of experience coaching executives at the Estee Lauder companies, and specializes in building and improving a high-performance culture in the workplace.

She loves working with senior leaders, helping them stay energized to energize those around them, and assisting them in building the lives they want inside and outside of their work.

Theresa also feels passionate about her volunteer work, unlocking the potential within young people as they enter their adult years.

Many of us are familiar with the term “burnout,” but today Theresa explains how we can recognize patterns of behavior that lead up to the issue in a leader’s life.

Senior leaders often struggle with a serious lack of time, which can lead to a neglect of self-care. Self-awareness can also be a challenge in more busy seasons, and many first sessions are filled with a description of exhaustion from the wear and tear of a fast pace work environment.

Theresa shares a story from her coaching experience where she asked a client’s goal for their time together, and the client responded that they don’t want to be burning the candle at both ends anymore. Their goal was to learn how to manage their time more wisely in order to avoid burnout.

The natural abilities of achievers tend to be a their high work ethic, commitment and grit, but they share common challenges as well: the need to delegate, problems prioritizing, and a lack of certain types of boundaries, especially in areas they haven’t felt like they had time to examine yet.

Leaders also often worry about how shifts in their approach might inadvertently scare their employees, and need to strategize how they will share with their teams that they’ve been reflecting and making changes in their work style and in life.

The last few years have caused an increase in work reflection, and Theresa has been able to coach her clients through role-playing conversations that will help them establish healthy boundaries in their workplaces. They write out their opening sentence and rehearse it so there’s an increased level of confidence going in to the conversation, and predict likely outcomes together.

We know Theresa Ralston’s contagious passion and well-earned wisdom in the field will inspire you as you join us for this episode.
